How Much Would You Pay to Get Bea Arthur Naked?
Can you possibly put a price on your love of The Golden Girls? John Currin's infamous 1991 painting Bea Arthur Naked may fetch between $1.8-2.5 million today at a Christie's auction.
According to the item's lot notes, the artist decided to create the Maude-era tribute while watching Golden Girls: "I was hearing voices in my head rant about how bad my paintings were and I thought, 'I might as well paint a picture of Bea Arthur, instead of these masculine abstract pieces.'"
What did the late TV icon think? "Maybe he was attracted to the feminist movement of the 1970s," she said, "because of Maude, I was the Joan of Arc of feminism. He certainly couldn't have done anything with Marlo Thomas of That Girl."
