“Death by misadventure” was the official ruling of Suzanne Greenaway, the coroner who finally determined the cause of death for singer Amy Winehouse.

According to Spinner.com, test results revealed that Winehouse died from extreme alcohol poisoning with a blood alcohol level more than five times of that used to determine the drunk-drive limit.

The singer’s public battle with substance abuse had caused a great deal of speculation when the 27-year-old’s body was discovered in her bed at her London home on July 23. While no illegal drugs were found in her system, several empty vodka bottles had been found in her room.

Winehouse’s physician, Dr. Christina Romete, revealed that the singer had started drinking once again after a brief period of sobriety shortly before her death.

A spokesman for the Winehouse family, Chris Goodman, said, “The court Heard that Amy was battling hard to conquer her problems with alcohol and it is a source of great pain to us that she could not win in time.”
