LISTEN: Margaret Cho on New DVD and Being "Queer"
When it comes celebrities as LGBT allies, few have been as open and public about their support as actress and comedienne Margaret Cho. Her comedy shows have long held a distinctly gay-sensibility, giving mainstream audiences a glimpse into our world but with humor and love rather than using us for stereotyped humor. She appeared on the cover of gay publications long before they were found to be an effective way to sell albums, movies and TV shows, and she's performed at countless fundraisers and events in support of LGBT causes.
Then she started calling herself "queer," and as a woman in a heterosexual marriage that seemed odd—both to straight and gay fans alike. She's been questioned about it in the past, has admitted her attraction to both genders as well as transsexual people, and yet for those people who love solid boxes within which to place their heroes this didn't quite make sense. We still love her, but what does "queer" mean to Margaret Cho?
To get the answer, Emmy Winner and host of OUTTAKE VOICES™, Charlotte Robinson, got Cho on the phone. The two chatted about her new Showtime comedy special Cho Dependent, which is available today (November 22nd) on DVD, but Robinson quickly dove into the "queer" question. With her usual honesty, Cho explains her thoughts on the topic and what being queer means to her. Could this suggest a whole new definition for the word?
Listen to the interview and decide for yourself.
Cho Dependent is Margaret Cho’s sixth live concert film. It was shot at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA, features songs from the album interwoven into the thought-provoking stories, as well as behind-the-scenes bonus footage.
