Lance Bass Says 'Trannies' on TV - Trouble Awaits
Talk about a TV moment where the host and guest just keep digging themselves a deeper hole the more they speak.
The Advocate's Jeremy Kinser reports that gay singer / dancer / celeb Lance Bass was guest-hosting on Access Hollywood this morning. He was interviewing comic Billy Eichner, who has a series on Fuse called Billy on the Street where he offers New York pedestrians money to answer silly questions. Bass suggests, "So you need to go to Christopher and Hudson and get those trannies on the corner there — that would be perfect."
In case you missed the memo, "tranny" and variations thereof are considered offensive terms to the mainstream transgendered community.
"I love a tranny," Eichner agrees. He then realizes his mistake and says the word again. "We're not supposed to call them trannies anymore... Did you see that Neil Patrick Harris called them a tranny [sic] on Twitter?"
So in less than 30 seconds they say it 4 times.
To make matters worse, the story explains that when asked if there's a "new name" for trans people, Bass replies, "I didn't get the memo." Eichner then suggests, "really, really gay? I don't know." Bass dishes it out one last time by saying, "I like my good ol' trannies."
No word yet if GLAAD is going to hold a protest. Or if Bass will ever host on Access Hollywood again.
