New Book from 'Black Lagoon' Star Is a Charming Must-Read
Julie Adams was one of the most gorgeous actresses in 1950s Hollywood. Adams was a contract player at Universal and she worked with everyone, including actors Rock Hudson, Charlton Heston, and even Elvis Presley. While not necessarily a household name, her most famous film is the camp classic Creature from the Black Lagoon playing the lovely bathing beauty who drove the poor creature to lust and kidnapping.
Adams has a new book out entitled The Lucky Southern Star: Reflections from the Black Lagoon. The charming book not only talks about her creature feature but also outlines her other fine performances including TV and stage. For cult movie fans, there's a whole chapter on the making of Creature from the Black Lagoon. At the time this film was made, it was just another Universal low budget horror movie. Though her basic job on the film was looking terrified and sexy in a bathing suit, she recalls how everyone struggled to keep from laughing as the movie's ridiculous story unfolded. Certainly, the film's camp classic status was something no one involved ever expected.
The book also offers some wonderful stories about Adams illustrious co-stars, and a number of tender memories of Adams' long marriage to this week's Vintage Hunk, Ray Danton. He was auditioning for her film Six Bridges to Cross, a part that Tony Curtis eventually got, but the two met, married and had two talented sons, including Mitchell Danton who helped Adams with her book.
Still lovely and vibrant at 85, Adams has been at several book signings in Los Angeles and her warm personality is proudly on display. There are a lot of great photos and stories in Julie's new book, which can be ordered on Amazon.com, or you can get a signed copy from the star's website at www.julieadams.biz
Julie Adams is a treasure. Growing up in the 1950s I loved her, and she is just as charming now with some great tales to tell.
