Hate Group Pressuring JCPenney to Drop Ellen DeGeneres

By: Michael Matson
2.2.2012

American retail chain JCPenney announced last week that it will forge a new partnership with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. Company president Michael Francis said, "We couldn't think of a better partner to help us put the fun back into the retail experience."

But One Million Moms, a project of the anti-gay American Family Association (designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center), is pressuring J.C. Penney to drop DeGeneres because the People's Choice Award winner for Favorite Daytime TV Host "offends traditional families" and claims that the majority of the company's customers "will no longer shop there."

The popularity of DeGeneres' show, as well as her successful partnerships with Cover Girl and American Express, suggests One Million Moms can be wrong. Still, JCPenney is paying close attention to the complaint and tracking the response. In support of Ellen, JoeMyGod posted customer service numbers to call and GLAAD has launched a Stand Up for Ellen page on its website, complete with petition.

Visit JoeMyGod for JCPenney's customer Service numbers.

Be serious.. What is wrong with this people, there are so many other importnant things for us to be worried about. Those MOM's you are all talking about " Get a life " for godsake.. Do something productive instead of HATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ray Peterson 2.8.2012 11:42:00 AM

mispelled ( Important) excuse me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

bill m 2.6.2012 9:49:00 AM

While I applaud JCP, I find something very ironic here. Back in the olden days, when Ellen was coming out on her sitcom, JCP pulled their ads from her show, because of complaints from the same type of people complaining now.

I am glad JCP has learned from the past, and grown to understand that Americans in general do not support such discrimination. Ellen was a good business decision, and her personal life will not make one bit of difference to her work for JCP. But, it will get me to start shopping there again.

David 2.6.2012 12:38:00 AM

What a load of Crap!! These straight bitches are just jealous!! My mother Loves Ellen!!

Adam F. 2.4.2012 11:09:00 PM

Well all I can say is that the few Moms that I know in MY life LOOOOOVE Ellen. And it has nothing to do with the fact that either she or myself are gay. She is just a fun person that anyone would love! That's how they feel and that's how I feel.

Anonymous 2.4.2012 8:56:00 PM

I'm off to JC Penny first thing in the morning to buy anything I can find. Those Million Moms don't shop at JC Penny anyway. They get everything they need from the Dollar Store. And I question if there's a million of them...... maybe 50 or 100, tops.

Anonymous 2.6.2012 11:54:00 AM

Actually I think they shop at wal mart, and live in trailer parks.

Anonymous 2.7.2012 4:16:00 PM

I think u mean dollartree lolz

Anonymous 2.6.2012 1:41:00 AM

so true!! they can only afford to buy something in a dollar shop! well unless they are rich enough to buy everything in an expensive shop or alike JC Penny. wahahahahaha

brandon 2.4.2012 4:02:00 PM

Seriously, this is REDICULOUS. More than half the world is GAY and you think that a bunch of stupid hillbilly moms will change the way JCPenny markets their company, well thats just alittle silly. Yes people can have an affect on the world but, these people are just plain dumb. Honestly theres more things that are important in this world to FRIGGIN GOSHDAMN worry about then someone who is GAY endorse a clothing companies products. Just to let all you narrow minded people who never ever like change or just never go out into the world to see that this world is diverse, if it wasnt diverse then we all would be the same and this world would be boring as all hell. Shame Shame S H A M E on those people who hate, GOD is a man of forgivness so what gives anybody, ANYBODY the right to judge others, not us. Good day to all those people out in this world who have to struggle with who you are, dont let anyone get you down or pull you down keep your head up and be STRONGER than them.

Anonymous 2.4.2012 2:42:00 PM

To all that hate; fuck you. Trying to reason with stupid is stupid.

WWADE 2.4.2012 1:46:00 PM

If they drop Ellen, I'll stop shopping at Penneys... Succumbing to uneducated, narrow minded bigots will cost Penneys far more than a minor group of a million. These narrow minded pinheads need to realize gay is not a choice, but mostly an inherited genetic pre-disposition. Maybe the 100 million GLBT's and their families and supporters world wide will stop shopping at Penneys if they change their mind about their commitment to Ellen.

Anonymous 2.4.2012 12:56:00 PM

The reason i do not shop at JC Pennies is most of their cloths are well lame. If they got some better cloths and also had Ellen as as spokes person I think they would attract a lot of positive attention and more people would shop their.

School Teacher 2.10.2012 1:08:00 PM

Sweetie, try wearing clothes, such as pants, shirts, underwear, etc., instead of trying to cover yourself in cloths. Cloths aren't very big, so I imagine it takes an awful lot of them to cover you every day, not to mention securing them to your body so they don't fall off.

Also, you didn't finish your last thought. People would shop their...what? Did you mean shopt their store? Are perhaps you meant to use there instead of there.

Of course, we may be talking two different business with similar names, as this discussion is about JC Penney and you are referencing a business apparently called JC pennies. Perhaps Pennies only sells cloths? JC Penney sells clothes in addition to cloths. Check them out sometime.

University Prof. 2.15.2012 2:34:00 PM

"Are perhaps you meant to use there instead of there."

If you're going to be snarky, you should quote the preceding post appropriately; I think you meant "there instead of their." ;-)

Anonymous 2.4.2012 12:02:00 PM

I live in a smaller town in SW Mississippi where JCP's is one of the busiest dept stores here. The majority of the shoppers are the working middle class with children and those who receive welfare. This is a truly conservative and super-Baptist valued population. When comparing stores and the merchandise offered, the other stores here are Kmart, Goodies and Walmart. From there, you move up to Belk and smaller custom/locally owned clothing stores; hence, a different buying customer (more money to spend) than JCP'S buyer. My point: because over 50% of the population here are those w/high school degrees or hs dropout and african-american (with 87% of that population unemployed & receiving welfare), I hope that none of this population is part of the 1M moms/AFA protesting against the JCP's/Ellen partnership! I would really like to know the make-up of the 1M Mom BS Group! If stats show a majority (or even a qtr) of these women receive welfare/gov handouts, JCP's should not even consider removing Ellen as their spokesperson. Ellen has done so much for women (and men) all over this world! Screw the AFA, the 1M Mom's and the birth canal they came in through!

David K 2.4.2012 9:34:00 AM

My mom would have not thought this, those moms who do should get off their high horses and get grip on reality. Elllen is a great chose. Being gay is part of lif, so deal with it.

David K 2.4.2012 9:34:00 AM

Anonymous 2.4.2012 6:32:00 AM

Why don't these women put their efforts to better use in helping people instead of hate.
What does that get anyone or does that get anywhere ? Ellen is a wonderful woman I will shop more at Pennys for making her spokesman there Good for them.. Hateing Gays or hating anyone is not what we were put on this earth to do love all so one million moms....get over it!!!

Anonymous 2.4.2012 4:08:00 AM

Why is it that anyone that is against gays automaticaly gets classified as "Haters"? Can't someone disagree with our lifestyle and just be said to have different opinions?

Canadian 2.4.2012 8:02:00 AM

We are a rightful minority and as such we should be protected from hate in all its forms. If you substituted "Muslim" or "Jewish" or "Black" or "Asian" or "Disabled" for "Gay" into this or other statements of hate the outrage would be very loud and I am sure it would be stopped. This is not just a different opinion ANONYMOUS and I am saddened that you actually feel this way (assuming you are gay).

Dave 2.4.2012 6:44:00 AM

They can disagree all they want; they have that right. What they don't have the right to do is to use their power to obstruct our lifestyle. While there is no law against this, it is ethically wrong for any system with power to actively work against those with less power just because "they disagree."

The struggle we are going through is very similar to the struggle Blacks went through for civil rights; a powerful, social elite trying to oppress a less powerful, social minority. The justifications have changed, but hate is still hate.

Rafael from Mexico City 2.4.2012 6:30:00 AM

one thin is just disagree ( by the way..it is their right ).
but hate is a different story. They don't just disagree. they want to boicot JC PENNY, for the simmple fact that has Ellen.
that is the difference between just "disagree" and "hate"
can't you see it?
PD. sorry my english

Zeke 2.4.2012 2:15:00 AM

I bet there is not 1 million of them actually. They just use the name to intimidate and make it seem they are more influential than they really are. I bet there are 6 of them, and all Westboro Baptists. Craziness! Since there are 6 billion people and 10% of the population is gay, I am in favor of creating the '600 Million Gays Society'. At least it would be more accurate than the '1 Mill Moms'.

Anonymous 2.4.2012 1:57:00 AM

ONE MILLION OVER BREEDING MOMS ON AN OVER CROWDED PLANET! Spreading Hatred . They all deserve a pie in the face just like Anita Bryant.

Anonymous 2.3.2012 11:45:00 PM

i shop JCP all the time ....i have worked there and i was there today shopping...JCP is a good investment in clothes and other home style stuff....they are up with the latest in fashion and they are cheap as well....you dont have to pay an arm and leg for the quality of the merchandise...did not know ellen was one of their spokeperson..but now that i know that...im willing to shop more often...like i dont have enuff clothes already...lol....
The hate that surrounds gay people in america....i am more ashamed of this country for all the shame it puts it gay countrerpart through....i do believe it when i hear the phrase "The Meek Shall Inherit The Earth "...when that time happens there will be no more room for the gay hating bastards that sidelines the globe the way they do....i pity these people....they call themselves the religious right ...i want to know what's religious about hating gays...where is there perfection in that....was not the agenda of the God Almighty who walked upon this earth in human form to convince people to Love one another and not be dissed by being ungrateful to each of us...we are not here to judge one another but to live in harmony and be our brother's keeper...instead we are shot...maimed...beaten, all becuz we dont think the way the religious right thinks...why these people even think surprises the hell out of me...they dont think they just react...they think when they die they goona go sit by God...i got news for them....you are judged by your good works and whats in your heart and how you treat people and the world around you...not for being the fools they are...what wickedness do they perserve that they need to fowl the air with....behold religious right your hour cometh and when it does....you will answer to God for all your misguided thoughts and misguided deeds....come quickly Lord Jesus....!

robert 2.3.2012 9:01:00 PM

p.s. i am a gay man.

robert 2.3.2012 9:00:00 PM

i seldom shop at pennies.but if ellen is to be their spokesperson i will shop there more often.

Anonymous 2.3.2012 7:20:00 PM

Yay for JCP!

I am so proud that they made their spokesperson contract with Ellen. She's terrific!

And good on them for standing up to pressure. Those One Million Moms nutjobs are not the voice of American consumers.

muzyqman 2.3.2012 7:17:00 PM

I stopped shopping at Penney's a long time ago, but as long as they are opposing this hate group and other bigots, I will start shopping there again.

Bobo 2.3.2012 5:54:00 PM

Damn, I million of them? I think that may be a "Lever 2000" conspiracy and them signing for all of their 2000 body parts. If J.C. Penny falls for this they will never get another "Penny" from me. Period! There isn't an ounce of hatred in Ellen! Learn from that!

Eden 2.3.2012 4:36:00 PM

Mmm..!!! Seems like a lot of you are missing the point here. J.C. Penney chose Ellen as a partner; they are not the villain. Of course they will be paying attention to the complaint as well as public reaction to the news of their association with Ellen; they have to; it's simply good business practice.

I am convinced that they are not terribly concerned about the impact of this group's complaint but it would be bad Public Relations to ignore it. Public support for anything Ellen has been great; hence the ''People's Choice Award''.

J.C. Penney will not back out of their partnership with Ellen just because a small group of bigots who probably don't shop at their stores is complaining; their marketing team is smarter than that.

Go Ellen !!! Go J.C. Penney !!!

bill m 2.6.2012 9:45:00 AM

"J.C. Penney will not back out of their partnership with Ellen just because a small group of bigots who probably don't shop at their stores is complaining; their marketing team is smarter than that."

Too bad Lowes marketing team was not as smart.

Anonymous 2.3.2012 3:47:00 PM

Damned good thing none of those million moms ever have/had any gay kids.
I'd hate to think they might be going to Ellen for reassurance and confidence - better they hang around with their bigoted stupid moms and get constantly criticized and hated.
:( sad

Topher 2.4.2012 4:39:00 PM

I would venture to say approximately 10,000 of those moms have a gay son or daughter. Unfortunately, these children are learning to hate themselves as they grow up.

Now, there is a tragedy.

Michael 2.3.2012 1:36:00 PM

I don't shop at JC Penny's but now I will give them a shot.
Yeaa, Ellen!

Benji 2.3.2012 12:28:00 PM

Really, really disturbing. Let's boycot them and don't buy any of their hate filled goods anymore.

Anonymous 2.3.2012 10:59:00 AM

Ellen, with all her magnetic, positive and humorous persona, is not the cause of family and religious values coming apart at the seams. It is from the inside, not the outside.
What would these religious right-wing fanatics do if they didn't have gay people to blame? Who would they choose to hate and target next? I think the church and family institutions need to clean out their own "closets" first before going after us. What makes them so right and righteous, anyway? Are they sin-free?? I don't think so. All this looks suspiciously like a case of jealousy and spiteful envy on the part of this so-called family-oriented group.
So, J.C. Penny, shame on you!! Ellen, keep on shining and you go, girl! We love you!!

Anonymous 2.3.2012 10:28:00 AM

maybe the million mom's still doesn't realize the persuasive buying power of queer America and how we can stand together to back-up Ellen and JCP by shopping in their stores and spending our money to prove that a boycott of non-traditional families shouldn't be acceptable anymore. We're tired of people trying to justify hate and prejudice by these kind of tactics. Stand up and go shopping!!!! Ellen rocks the WORLD !!!!

PS. How nice will it be to shop in an environment without negative MOM"S and their brainwashed, screaming, non-behaving in public brats in tow ?... Gives me one more reason to shop there... Plus I need a new set of all-clad cookware. lol...:)

FLIP 2.3.2012 10:27:00 AM

JCP's new histrionic screaming campaign is bad enough, but the fact that they are even paying attention to this hate group for marketing reasons insures that I and anyone I know will ever shop there.

Anonymous 2.3.2012 9:29:00 AM

those moms should get a life and come into 2012 not 1890

Anonymous 2.3.2012 7:46:00 PM

omg you are so right!!! Yay for Ellen... Love JCP...

Anonymous 2.3.2012 8:37:00 AM

Go Ellen Go!!!!!!!!! Cant believe in 2012 there are still people like those 1 milllion mums with nothing else better to do than criticise gay people.

Anonymous 2.4.2012 4:12:00 AM

in 3012 there will be people critizing gay people.

proteus_75 2.2.2012 10:48:00 PM

If JCP gets involved with this stupid crap that helps to divide our American People, to gain of the Communist chinese, I will not shop them or maomart ever again

Evelynn Amos Hines 2.2.2012 6:42:00 PM

I have shopped their for years. So goes Ellen DeGeneres,so goes E.A.H.

alphamx 2.2.2012 6:09:00 PM

i don“t shop in JCP no more. but if Ellen partners with JPC after all this mess. i will definitely go back and have a browse. a shop with attitude and personality i hope to see.

Mitch 2.2.2012 5:10:00 PM

Nothing's wrong with Ellen. Everything is wrong with JCP if they drop her in response to a hate group. I hope they do the right thing. If not, there are other places to shop.

Anonymous 2.2.2012 4:36:00 PM

I shop JCP online quite a bit. I will inform them of my support for them and Ellen DeGeneres. If they cave to the bollocky AFA, I will not give them my custom.
