James Franco Channels Robert Mapplethorpe in New Photos

By: Michael Matson

Last week we posted the new German GQ Style cover featuring a photo of James Franco pressing a switchblade knife against his face. As it turns out, that cover is part of a larger series of images of Franco channeling the late artist, Robert Mapplethorpe.

Photographer of the Year Mariano Vivanco and stylist Grant Woolhead helped transform the Oscar-nominated actor into Mapplethorpe, who died of AIDS-related causes in 1989 and remains a controversial figure to this day. The session is a also preview of what's to come for Franco, as he is currently slated to play Mapplethorpe in an upcoming film co-produced by actress Eliza Dushka.
