Behind the Scenes of 'Out's Neil Patrick Harris Photo Shoot

By: Stacy Lambe

As the hit CBS series, How I Met Your Mother, draws to a close, Neil Patrick Harris is ready to embark on the next chapter of his career, the title role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The character, an East German transgender glam rock singer, is a departure from Barney, who Harris portrayed on TV for nine years.

In a new spread for our sister site and publication, Out magazine, Harris channels his inner glam rocker for a glitter-filled photo shoot.

Barney he is no more as he sheds the preppy suits in favor of heavy mascara and tons of attitude. Even though he looks confident in the shoot, he has some insecurities about reviving Hedwig on stage.

"Hedwig is bringing up a lot of super insecure things within me," Harris says in the Out interview. "I have never thought drag was intoxicating, I’ve never had a fun drunken Halloween in drag, never been in heels, really. I’ve lived my whole life being attracted by masculinity – it’s why I like guys. I’m not a super effete person, and I have to turn into that, and in doing so it brings up a lot of homophobic insecurities within myself.”

Despite fears of masculinity, Harris himself will have to admit he looks super sexy in this new role. It's a look that's completely different, erasing any memory of those childhood acting days as Doogie Howser.
