Did Ricky Martin Mentor Ian Thorpe on Coming Out?
Olympic gold medalist Ian Thorpe made headlines earlier this week when he came out as gay in a television interview, but according to The Mirror, in the weeks leading up to the interview, he had a little help preparing — from none other than Ricky Martin.
The singer, who is in Australia promoting the current season of The Voice, has refused to confirm or deny the rumors, but the publication says he was "instrumental" in Thorpe's decision to come out.
Martin has instead opted to respect Thorpe's privacy, saying: "I am extremely happy that he is talking about his happiness and that is where I would like to leave it."
The singer also took to Twitter to express his support for Thorpe. He wrote: "Congrats @IanThorpe! Brave man! Happy for you! Millions appreciate what you've done! Proud of you! #SelfLove".
In his interview, Thorpe, a five-time Olympic gold medal winner, said he finally decided to come out because "the lie had become so big that I didn't want people to question my integrity."
Martin came out in a blog post in 2010. In the post, Martin wrote that he was a "fortunate homosexual man."
