The Art of Pick Up Lines

By: Jase Peeples

Pick up lines can sometimes feel like a necessary evil in the world of dating. Lines such as, “What’s your sign?” are cheesy on an epic scale and are more likely to make your target run for the hills than give you his number. However, a good pick up line could be just the thing to get that conversation going or help you score the digits of that handsome hunk you’ve been chatting up for the past few minutes. The set up is just as important as the follow up, so have a plan in place that keeps your strategy simple, smooth and sexy from beginning to end.

If you’re looking to just get a conversation going, it’s best to approach the guy in your sites with an icebreaker more than a pick up line. A good line may get your foot in the door, but following it up with an open-ended question is more likely to start a dialogue.

Compliments are a great way to flatter him and will usually get a positive response. After all, everyone’s a little (or A LOT) vain. “I almost always start off with a compliment when I want to talk to a guy I think is cute,” says James from New Haven, CT. “Complimenting his jeans, shoes, smile, or body gets his attention in a way that isn’t too aggressive.” This is a great way to break the ice and make him feel good at the same time— but don’t stop there. If you compliment something like his shoes, follow it up with a question that requires more than a yes or no answer. “Where did you get them?” is a perfect follow up to a compliment on his jeans and will give you more options to expand the conversation.

First contact isn’t the only time a great pick up line can work to your advantage. Even after starting, (and maintaining) a conversation, some guys still manage to drop the ball. If you feel like you may have a connection with him, it’s time to move things along and hook that hottie for a date. Louis from Montreal suggests using the line, “Hey, I eat food. Do you eat food? We should go out.” A witty line like this could be just the thing you need to move from small talk to successfully closing the deal. It’s a way of showing him that you don’t take yourself too seriously, you’re easy-going and you’re interested in seeing him again. All great qualities in making a pick up strategy feel organic and natural rather than forced and practiced.

Having a plan in place and a few pick up lines at the ready can serve you well whether you’re making first contact or crossing the finish line. However, no two situations are ever exactly alike. Make sure you’re ready to improvise and pay attention to timing in order to insure you lines have the most impact.
