Broadway's Bicep Bitch-fight
(Getty Images) Move over, Mariah and JLo - there's a new diva in town! And this one isn't asking for jasmine-scented toilet water or insisting that everyone avert their eyes in her presence. According to the NY Post, this one is suffering from a bad case of "bicep envy", and is throwing a hissy fit because one of the other boys has bigger muscles than he does.
Waaaah...poor Mario Lopez! He's worked so hard his whole life to get on Broadway, and he has to deal with this crap when he finally gets there? How could any director who truly knew his craft not understand that the audience is there to see Mario's arms, not those of some hunky back-up dancer (Nick Adams, in this case) and they certainly aren't there just to see "A Chorus Line" after all...
So what's a little wardrobe change to an iconic set of costumes? Is it really that unreasonable for Lopez to insist that Adam's character, assistant choreographer Larry, wear a hoodie - with long sleeves, natch - whenever he stands next to Lopez' Zach? And so what if the Zach character's outfit of a long-sleeved tan sweater has been worn by the legions of Zach's that came before him over the past three decades, and is even based on the outfit actually worn by "A Chorus Line's" creator, Michael Bennett? History and nostalgia pale in comparison to Lopez' impressive body of work and his commitment to his craft...in the shape of 250 curls a day.
The producers must have agreed, as Lopez is now sporting a short-sleeved number to better highlight the gun show. Good for them; nothing like caving in to the demands of a C-level TV retread from one of the worst shows in history who is destined to a future on VH1 at best. I hate to think that people really are going to see "A Chorus Line" just to see Mario Lopez' arms, but if they are, what can you do...give him the short-sleeves. But make the other guy cover up? If people ARE coming for one set of arms, can't we assume they'll also enjoy this second set? Lopez needs to swallow his pride and let Adams flex his stuff too. It's all for a good cause, boys...no need to fight...let's play nice...
