Sarah Palin Rocks Republican National Convention
(Getty Images) Say what you will about her, but Sarah Palin doesn't wilt under pressure.
And the pressure was on last night when John McCain's running mate took the stage at the Republican National Convention to give a speech that would make or break her.
Locked and loaded, the Alaskan governor came out guns ablazin'.
I have to confess that I am not a Republican, and I don't agree with Palin on, well, any of the issues.
(Getty Images) That said, this Tina Fey lookalike—am I the only one who sees the resemblance?—delivered a great speech, addressing critics who have derided her lack of experience right off the bat.
"I'm not a member of the permanent political establishment, and I've learned quickly, these past few days, that if you're not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone. But here's a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion. I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country," she said.
Palin went on to take a number of jabs at Barack Obama. "Before I became governor of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves," Palin said. "I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities."
You've got to give her credit for knowing how to pack a putdown with punch.
But will this speech win over swing voters? Probably not. If you don't agree with Palin on the issues, you're not going to vote for her.
But did it succeed in firing up the Republican base? You bet. While McCain has failed to win their hearts, Palin had them swooning last night.
What did you think of her speech? And, like me, do you plan to lobby Tina Fey to return to Saturday Night Live to portray Palin in the show's inevitable election-themed skits?
