Boy Wonder to hit the Small Screen

What is the only thing hotter than Christian Bale brooding as Batman in last summer’s blockbuster hit, the Dark Knight? If you’re thinking a small screen adaptation of Batman’s young twinky sidekick, Robin, then you answered correctly.

Chrisodonnell With the success of the Dark Knight, its no big surprise the Batman franchise is a hot commodity now. However, the keyword here is Batman. Batman is the hot commodity, and his hot-a-licious sidekick Robin has been on the sidelines since the 2005 revival of the license. Christopher Nolan, the director of the new Batman franchise, has specifically stated that Robin would not appear in the new movies because it’s the story of a young Batman and therefore Robin is still just a child. So it seems that all hope of us seeing another young hunk following in the footsteops of Chris O’Donnell is loss. That is until today.

According to Variety, the CW announced plans to produce a pilot based on Batman’s Boy Wonder tentatively title The Graysons. Presumably, the series will follow the story of a pre-Batman Dick Grayson and the road that leads him to become one of Gotham City’s legendary defenders of the night.

Variety further reports that on board the project are Smallville producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders, as well as Supernatural executive producer McG. So we can definitely expect to see the pilot to follow in Smallville’s footsteps. In my opinion, this can be bittersweet. While Smallville is great in providing great eye candy, it can lack a certain depth and is only appreciated by the myspace generation. In the comics, Dick Grayson’s story is that of a young man who tries to live outside the shadow of Batman and establish a name for himself. With a series about the character before he became a hero on the CW, we can expect to see plenty of Gossip Girl drama mixed in with some fantasy elements— all of which has been done with Smallville.

In the meantime, the producers are going to want to go for someone with a boyish appeal, medium build, and a peter pan haircut. I can definitely see someone like Chace Crawford stepping into the role but we know that’s only a fantasy. We’ll keep you posted once casting is announced.
