"The Starter Wife" Returns And Its Gay Designer Might Get Some Action
I know Will & Grace alum Debra Messing is the star of USA Network's The Starter Wife, which debuted as a miniseries and is now a full-fledged series, and she is delightful as Molly Kagan, a woman struggling to build a life in shallow Los Angeles post-divorce. But I recommend watching the show's two-hour premiere on Friday, October 10 at 9 p.m. EST/8 p.m. CST for Chris Diamantopoulos. Simply put, Chris is hot. There's a scene in the second half of the opener where he is wearing a black v-neck t-shirt and black jeans, and, damn, he looks good.
Unfortunately, Chris isn't gay—he is married to Becki Newton who plays Amanda on Ugly Betty. But he does play a gay interior designer named Rodney, who happens to be one of Molly's two best friends. I have to admit that it was disconcerting at first to see Messing with a gay best friend other than her original gay best friend Will, but I quickly adjusted.
Anyway, as you'll see in the first part of the season opener, Rodney has a potential new client—a successful action movie star named Felix (played by James Black). Felix is built, and apparently in all the right places judging by Rodney's reaction when he catches a glimpse of his client losing his towel as he steps off a massage table.
Not surprisingly, Rodney has a crush on Felix that rivals my crush Rodney's portrayer, but it's a lost cause because a macho guy like Felix isn't interested in men. Or is he?
Oh, what do you think!
Another reason to watch the show: the fabulous Judy Davis (I'll never forget her amazing portrayal of Judy Garland in the ABC miniseries Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadow), who actually won an Emmy last year for her portrayal of Molly's other best friend, Joan, a recovering alcoholic and snarky wit who wishes her husband wanted to do the deed with her. Sadly for her, he doesn't. But on Friday's premiere of The Starter Wife, she meets another man who is interested but something of a mess.
