After generating strong buzz at the Sundance Film Festival, girl rock group biopic The Runaways is set to bow in Los Angeles March 11, followed by a New York City splash March 17.

Building toward the much-anticipated film that chronicles the trailblazing group’s rise to fame, real-life Runaways founder and out rock legend Joan Jett will perform with her band the Blackhearts on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show March 9, with the film’s Jett proxy, Kristen Stewart, appearing the following night to discuss the film and her experience playing the legendary guitarist. Costar Dakota Fanning, who portrays Cherie Currie in the movie, will stop by Leno’s show to chat on March 12.

Stewart has said she felt empowered taking on Jett’s unapologetic persona. “Whenever I wasn't coming from the right place,” the young actress explained, Jett had words of encouragement: “She was always like, ‘Kristen! Pussy to the wood! Fuck the guitar!’ I was like, "OK … So when you have Joan Jett telling you to fuck your guitar ... Yeah, I liked it.”

The film also touches on sexual encounters between Currie and Jett and features a much-hyped make-out scene between Fanning and Stewart in a roller rink.
