"California Gay" Ryan Yezak Interview
A couple weeks ago we posted "California Gays," a super cool parody video set to the tune of Katy Perry's summer hit single, "California Gurls." The video was soon getting tons of hits (we'd like to take all the credit for that, but genius material often has its own way of finding success), and since the Gay.com readers loved it so much we wanted to learn more about the man behind the lens.
Enter this hunky stud, Ryan Yezak.
Yezak took a couple minutes to chat about how this cult sensation was shot, his inspirations, whether he likes boxers or briefs, and what fans can expect to see from him in the coming months. We also included some videos below.
What inspired you to shoot California Gays?
I think the song itself, as well as living here in California, inspired me to shoot the music video. When I first heard "California Gurls" in early May, I knew that it was going to be the song of the summer and that I had the opportunity to do something really creative with it. I had a vision and I went with it.
How many friends did you enlist in project?
Fifteen. There was only one guy who I didn’t already know, but we’re friends now.
How long did it take to shoot?
We shot it all in 2 days – 2 very long, but fun days.
Have you shot other videos besides this one?
I have probably shot hundreds of videos now, and most of them are on YouTube. I made a Lady Gaga “Telephone” music video earlier this year that has accumulated nearly 12 million views. I shot a Ke$ha “Take It Off” music video right before “California Gays.” I made a Gap commercial parody late last year. The first viral video I made was in October of last year to Britney Spears’ “3.”
What's your story?
Am I looking to be a filmmaker? Yes. Am I looking to be a director? Yes. I’m not exactly sure what my story is yet, but I do know one thing – I want it to be a great one. I have sacrificed so much to be out here in LA and I haven’t wasted a second since I arrived. I was born & raised in Houston, TX, went to college at UT in Austin, TX, and then moved out to Hollywood literally 2 weeks after graduating. I love to entertain. It makes me so happy when people see my work, whether they like it or not. I am driven by passion and when I am passionate about something, there’s nothing that will stop me from doing it.
What inspires you creatively?
Music inspires me more than anything. My life revolves around music and I love it. People also inspire me. Artists like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. A lot of things inspire my creativity. I soak everything up like a sponge, I process it, and then I decide whether I like it or not. I’ve lived a very interesting life so far, which has left me with a very unique way of thinking. Now I want to share that with the world.
Okay, now for some random fun questions. Are you single, dating, boyfriend or married?
I am single. I’m not married, I don’t have a boyfriend, and I don’t date. I have a lot of goals that I want to achieve in life – some I have yet to even realize. I found out early on that it sometimes takes a lot of sacrifice to do what you are most passionate about. I do believe in love though, so I wouldn’t turn my back on the right guy. I think the right guy will have aspirations that are similar to mine and I have yet to meet that guy.
Boxers or briefs?
Briefs. I grew up wearing boxers and thinking I was straight, so I hate wearing them now. I also don’t think people should wear big clothes – shirts, jeans, underwear, etc. Fitted clothing is so much sexier when you wear clothes that accentuate your body type.
Kylie or Robyn?
Robyn. I kind of missed the whole Kylie era. I do love a lot of her newer stuff though and would jump at the chance to work with her. But I love Robyn. I think she is unbelievably talented. I have a brilliant idea for a music video to her song “Dancing On My Own,” I just wish I had the time to make it. I can totally see myself working with both of them someday.
Gym body boys or thin swanky fashionistas?
Somewhere in between. I’ve been attracted to both, but I think someone who is tone and semi muscular is the most attractive.
What are you currently loving on your iPod?
“The Only Exception” by Paramore, and “Impossible” by Shontelle.
What's your next project fans can look forward to seeing?
They can look forward to the “Making of California Gays,” a second season of my reality show “In The Loop” that we’ll be filming in two weeks, and a new music video hopefully sometime in late August.
