The Super-Heroic Boys Of Summer
Captain America, Green Lantern, Thor, X-Men, and Priest. No, this isn’t the roster of the latest and greatest superhero team; it’s just a small part of Hollywood’s 2011 lineup.
It seems like Hollywood has fallen in love with comic books and one peek at the release schedule over the next three months makes it obvious filmmakers are hoping you have too. But don’t worry; even if you don’t know the difference between Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and The Green Hornet, these films will have enough man-candy to keep you interested until the credits roll.
Here’s a list of five comic book adaptations set to storm the cineplex in the following few weeks and the hunky costume-clad heroes who will have you rushing to the ticket booth faster than a speeding bullet.
Release Date: May 6
After taking a turn at playing Captain Kirk’s father in J. J. Abram’s Star Trek reboot, Chris Hemsworth suits up to play Marvel Comic’s god of thunder, Thor, later this month. Rumor has it that Hemsworth takes his superheroing seriously—so seriously that he grew too buff for his own costume and was asked by the director to tone down his physique. The film boasts an impressive cast with A-List actors such as Academy Award Winners Natalie Portman (Black Swan), and Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs). The cast of Thor should be enough reason for any film buff to line up on opening day—of course, watching Hemsworth’s bulging biceps for two hours doesn’t hurt either.
Release Date: May 13
Priest is based on a Korean comic book by the same name and takes place in an alternate reality where vampires and humans continue to fight a centuries-old war between their respective races. This will be Cam Gigandet’s second big-budget film involving vampires, but don’t look for sparkling skin on Mr. Gigandet’s ab-tastic bod this time around. He’ll be playing one of the heroes in this story, and unlike his fellow cast mates in Twilight, the vampires in this movie don’t look like the type you’d want to take to dinner.
X-Men: First Class
Release Date: June 3
X-Men has got to be the gayest superhero film franchise of all time. Hot mutants run around in tight leather costumes and have special abilities. Did I mention they were born that way and society hates and fears them because they don't understand that? Just switch the word mutant with gay and you’ve got yourself one heck of a queer allegory. James McAvoy stars as the young Professor Charles Xavier in this prequel to the previous X-men trilogy. With those hypnotic blue eyes and angelic face, who wouldn’t want to stay after school for some one on one tutoring with this teacher?
Release Date: June 17
Green Lantern has been around in one form or another since the 1940s, but the Emerald Ring-Slinger has never looked hotter. This will be the first live action Green Lantern film and from the looks of the new trailer it’s going to be THE superhero film to see this summer. With a production budget of 150 million, it’s a safe bet Ryan Reynolds won’t be the only eye candy projected across the big screen on June 17th. Look for Star Wars level special effects and hopefully some shameless exploitation of the sexy star.
Captain America: The First Avenger
Release Date: July 22
If you thought Chris Evans was hot as the Human Torch in the two Fantastic Four films, get ready for a quick trip to a cold shower once you get a peek at his beefed up bod in Captain America: The First Avenger. His new and improved physique is so far beyond hot it’s insane! Thankfully you don’t have to wait until July 22nd to see the results of his new workout regime. The super-heroic stud can be seen in all his shirtless glory in the trailer below.
