First Look: James Franco's Biography of Gay Actor Sal Mineo

By: Jackson Lourd

Maybe James Franco thinks his resume with roles in Milk and Howl isn't gay enough — and not that we're complaining — but one of the most eagerly awaited film projects is surely Franco's upcoming take on the short, tragic life of Sal Mineo.

Mineo, who starred as Plato, a teenager smitten with James Dean's character in the 1955 classic Rebel Without a Cause, was notoriously murdered in West Hollywood in 1976. Franco, who once starred as Dean in a TV film, has co-written, directed, and co-starred in a new film biography of the actor. The Advocate has posted numerous photos and speculates that the film will only portray the events surrounding the homicide.
