New details on Nintendo’s highly anticipated The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Wii system have surfaced.

Fans of this popular series have been waiting to hear of a solid release date and while an exact date is still not confirmed, it appears that the wait is almost over.

IGN reports that the game is now complete and designers are now fine-tuning the 1-to-1 controls. Players will have complete freedom of movement with the sword-fighting element of the game. Movement on the screen will exactly match the movement of the player—making for an entirely new experience in a Zelda game.

The-Legend-of-Zelda-Skyward-Sword1 Another planned first for this installment of the franchise is a “simultaneous worldwide release.” The team behind Skyward Sword says a worldwide release date is important because “you have to put Zelda all out at once or else the story’s going to get spoiled.”

For some gay fans in particular, the storylines for several recent installments of the Zelda franchise have had the added bonus of being open enough to allow for alternative interpretations. In the earliest Zelda adventures, an obvious romantic overtone was woven into the relationship between the hero, Link, and Princess Zelda. However, later games would leave the nature of the relationship more vague giving gaymers the freedom to reinterpret the sexual orientation of the hero at their command and giving them a more personal gaming experience.

The-Legend-of-Zelda-Skyward-Sword2 Skyward Sword may have a similar openness to the storyline as early reports reveal that the upcoming game will take place at an earlier point in the lives of the characters where Link and Zelda are classmates.

While some have seen the desire to reinterpret the plot of video games as unnecessary, other fans enjoy the ability to play games through a queer lens as often as possible due to the overwhelming lack of representation for gays and lesbians within the industry.

Regardless of the story details, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is shaping up to be the grandest adventure for Link yet.
