By day, David Bromstad is the wildly popular HGTV Design Star and host of Color Splash, a satisfying dollop of a television show. But by night, from December 1 – 3, he is an artist of major imagination and craftsmanship in his first open-to-the-public exhibition, "Body, Money, Death,” at the Z Ocean Hotel South Beach during Art Basel 2011.

To celebrate the exhibition, the Z Ocean will be rebranded as “The Bromstad” for three days only from 5:00 – 8:00 pm and will feature a redesigned lobby and common area styled with new chandeliers and customized furniture—particularly striking under Bromstad’s signature flair. December 1st is a private event, but the exhibit is open to the public on December 2nd and 3rd.

"Everything in this show has my sense of humor and my style, but I also wanted to show another layer that viewers don’t always get to see on HGTV," Bromstad says. "I want my fans, both old and new, to walk into this exhibition and smile and be entertained. And maybe giggle a bit."

The exhibition comprises a wide array of paintings and customized furniture pieces, even matroyshka dolls created at Bromstad’s South Florida studio for fans as well as arty types in town for the country’s biggest fine art event.

"Everything in this show has my sense of humor and my style, but I also wanted to show another layer that viewers don’t always get to see on HGTV," he says. "I want my fans, both old and new, to walk into this exhibition and smile and be entertained. And maybe giggle a bit."

Proceeds from art sold at the exhibition will benefit The Bakehouse Art Complex, a not-for-profit organization offering studio space and exhibition galleries for emerging and midcareer artists.
