Star Wars: The Old Republic (Finally) Goes Gay (Sort of)

When video game developer BioWare released the highly-anticipated MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, many gaymers were disappointed that the initial release did not include the option for players to romance characters of the same sex (a feature included in another of the company’s popular games, Mass Effect 3). However, BioWare promised same-sex romance opportunities would be available in future game updates and it looks like they’re finally going to deliver – sort of.

According to Cnet, same-sex romance interludes will be available this spring in the upcoming Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion pack. However, the same-sex romance interaction will be limited to flirting with non-player characters.

Unfortunately, Jeff Hickman, executive producer of Star Wars: The Old Republic, revealed in a blog post that any chance of us getting to play out some hot jedi-on-smuggler action has once again been placed on the back burner. "I realize that we promised SGR to you guys and that many of you believed that this would be with a companion character," Hickman wrote. "Unfortunately, this will take a lot more work than we realized at the time and it (like some other pieces of content we talked about earlier in the year) has been delayed as we focused on the changes required to take the game free-to-play. As we have said in the past, allowing same gender romance is something we are very supportive of."
