X-Men Gay Wedding: Northstar to Marry Boyfriend

By: Rick Andreoli

Marvel comics confirmed yesterday that Northstar, former mutant member of Alpha Flight and current X-Man, will be marrying his boyfriend Kyle in the June issue of Astonishing X-Men #51. This decision follows on last year's gay wedding of Kevin Keller to his boyfriend in Archie comics' Life with Archie, which helped boost sales for that company. Northstar was the first character to come out at Marvel comics and the most well-known, though there have been several openly gay characters since then. While the X-Men are currently based in San Francisco, Northstar is a French-Canadian hero; no word if he'll be married in Canada or in the gayest US city of them all.

According to comics site Bleeding Cool, the issue ships on June 20th and the company has “secured mainstream coverage both on-air and in print, for something that has never been seen inside the pages of a Marvel comic. Not only that, but some retailers are already saving the date and are hosting special wedding events in their stores… This will be an event that will have worldwide mass-media attention, driving customers to your stores. Because of the nature of the event and the promised mass media break, we cannot say who will be tying the knot, but we promise that it will send shockwaves throughout the nation.”

Supporting the wedding (and hoping to make some cash along the way by making this a collectible comic) Marvel is encouraging retailers to bump up their orders. In exchange, the comics giant will give retailers discounts on their purchases. There will also be varient covers—a special edition cover that isn't sold on mainstream newstands and thus more improtant to collectors—for Astonishing X-Men #50, which retailers assume will be the proposal issue. There will be a varient cover for #51 as well.

Below is a scene where Wolverine (Logan) asks Northstar to join the new X-Men team and we see him with Kyle.
