In August of this year, gay artist Manny Castro painted the words "Tastes Like Hate" on the side of a Torrance, California Chick-fil-A restaurant.

He did so in protest of anti-gay donations and comments made by the restaurant's president Dan Cathy. Castro avoided criminal charges by offering to pay the $700 in re-painting costs.

For several weeks, a woman verbally harassed the boyfriend of 39-year-old Canadian Christopher Whittle, calling him a faggot and a fruit. When Whittle witnessed this firsthand, he sprayed the woman with mace.

The "woman" turned out a 14-year-old girl who Whittle said looked much older. He now faces "four charges including assault with a weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon."

University of Colorado Boulder student Peter Smith got arrested by the Secret Service this February after trying to glitter bomb GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney during a campus speech.

Smith committed the bombing in protest of Romney's anti-gay political stances. As a result, Smith faced jail time, expulsion from school and a $1,000 fine for creating a disturbance, throwing a missile and committing an unlawful act on campus.

The Pink Pistols are a North American organization "dedicated to the legal, safe, and responsible use of firearms for self-defense of the sexual-minority community."

Founded in 2000, their official mottos are "Pick on someone your own caliber" and "Armed gays don't get bashed."

Jimmy LaSalvia, co-founder and executive director of the conservative gay group GOProud, also agrees that responsible gun ownership could save gay lives.

When Erin Davies of Troy, New York found "fAG" and "U R gay" spray-painted on her new Volkswagon Beetle, she decided to drive the defaced car on a 55,000 mile road trip through the United States.

During her trip, she reportedly interviewed 500 people about anti-gay hate crimes. Later on, she had her car repainted in bright rainbow colors with the word "fagbug" written on the doors.

She has since turned her recordings from the journey into a documentary.

In early September, thousands of Facebookers united against Midwestern mother Holly Biffle after viewing an image of an anti-gay comment she seemed to make on her Facebook page.

However, Biffle and her family soon told sources that the image was a fabrication and that Biffle had never made any such comments. After receiving physical threats and having her home address published online, Biffle and her family went into hiding.

During a stand-up routine by comedian Eddie Griffith, Griffith allegedly targeted Fiona Walshe and her girlfriend by saying, "All you need is a good-man!! I’ll volunteer my services... you won’t be needing any strap-ons or vibrators with me.”

When he allegedly began violently thrusting his hips in Walshe's face, Walshe threw her drink at him. In response, the audience pelted her and her girlfriend with bottles and drinks until they ran out of the club.

Over the last year, equality advocate Zach Wahls has been at the forefront of an ongoing campaign to get the Boys Scouts of America to overturn their policy banning gay scouts.

He began by delivering a petition of 275,000 signatures to the Scouts' annual meeting in Florida, and has since persuaded corporate donors to stop funding the anti-gay organization.

In 1990, New York City had a 120 percent jump in violent crimes against gays. To counter the violence, Chris Kreussling and other New York gays organized the Pink Panther Patrol, a gay defense group that patrolled the Village on late weekend nights.

Many Panthers carried no weapons. They also offered self-defense classes, free alert whistles and maps highlighting unsafe areas.

One year later, Metro Goldwyn Mayer sued the group for co-opting the name of the Pink Panther film series. Shortly thereafter, the Panthers stopped patrolling altogether.

After making disparaging comments about gay adoption and same-sex marriage, openly gay actor Rupert Everett reportedly received death threats.

"All the queens out there now have it in for me," Everett said. "I'm loathed by them. I'm having to take evasive action."
