Sarah Silverman “Cannot Imagine Wanting to Get Married” While Gays Can’t
While a lot of straight celebrities vocalize their support for marriage equality, comedian Sarah Silverman takes her beliefs further, recently reaffirming her commitment not to marry until gays and lesbians can.
Silverman spoke to the ladies of The View about her strong feelings on the subjects of gay marriage while promoting the premiere of the new season of her Comedy Central show, The Sarah Silverman Program.
The silly and shockingly foul-mouthed funny girl was candidly clear about her views on the current state of marriage inequality in our country.
"I cannot imagine wanting to get married right now at this time in America,” Silverman said seriously. “If you’re for equal rights, why would you get married right now? It’s like joining a country club that doesn’t allow blacks or Jews. There’s no difference. Why would I wanna join that club? It’s gross.”
The performer, who first vowed not to marry until all Americans legally could back when she was still with ex Jimmy Kimmel, discussed her commitment to LGBT rights and shared her thoughts with The Advocate, promising exciting developments for TSSP’s gay couple, Steve and Brian, in the new season.
“Steve and Brian have a pretty amazing arc this season,” Silverman revealed. “I really don’t want to give too much away, but they take their relationship to the next level. You’ll also meet Steve’s parents and Brian’s father this year. Steve and Brian actually have the ‘A’ story line — the main story line — in our eighth episode this season that will make you cry at the end. Seriously.”
The usually silly Silverman remains steadfastly committed to equal rights, reiterating to The Advocate, “Lately I’ve been really annoyed by any liberal person getting married who says they stand for gay rights. How can anyone in good conscience get married right now?
Silverman also says she identifies with her LGBT fans and treasures her two lesbian best friends. “I’m pretty much a lesbian in every way other than loving penis. I love Nanci Griffith, Patty Griffin, and Tegan and Sara. I play all sports — I have a b-ball, softball glove, and football in my trunk at all times,” she joked. “Plus anyone would tell you I wear cargo pants daily. When I try to dress up, I look like a tranny.”
