"Gay" dog refused entry to Australian restaurant

In what has to be one of the strangest stories of the week, AFP reported Sunday that an Australian restaurant refused entry to a blind man because a waiter thought the man's seeing-eye dog was gay.

The waiter objected to Ian Jolly bringing his guide dog Nudge into Adelaide's Thai Spice restaurant last May because he thought Jolly's female companion said she wanted to "bring a gay dog" into the restaurant (clearly she was saying "guide" dog). On Friday, South Australia's Equal Opportunity Tribunal ordered the restaurant—which displays a "guide dogs welcome" sign—to pay $1,500 compensation and offer Jolly a written apology for discriminating against him on the grounds of his disability.

Jolly told The Sunday Mail he was happy with the result.

"I just want to be like everybody else and be able to go out for dinner, to be left alone and just enjoy a meal," he said.

No word yet on the ruling from Nudge or South Park's Sparky the Gay Dog (pictured above).
