Palin Apologizes, but Not for Saying "Faggot"And Gay Conservatives Claim It's a Conspiracy
Yesterday we talked about Willow Palin—the 16-year-old daughter of Sarah— verbally sparring with a young man on Facebook because he had criticized her mom's reality show, Sarah Palin’s Alaska. Willow had said, "Haha your so gay. I have no idea who you are, But what I've seen pictures of, your disgusting ... My sister had a kid and is still hot." Willow later wrote, "Tre stfu. Your such a faggot."
Now her sister, Bristol Dancing with the Stars Palin, is weighing in with an apology—but not for using anti-gay slurs. Meanwhile, Tammy Bruce, chair of gay conservative group GOProud’s advisory council, thinks everyone should leave Willow alone.
During the initial Facebook battle, Bristol Palin participated in the exchange but didn't use any anti-gay slurs. Willow has since deleted her Facebook account, so Bristol used hers to send this pseudo-apology: "Willow and I shouldn't have reacted to negative comments about our family. We apologize.” She continued, “On a nicer note, thank you for supporting the great competition in Dancing with the Stars!"
To be clear, Bristol is apologizing for reacting to negative comments, not for her sister calling someone a "faggot."
“The ‘slur’ used here is one you could hear on the streets of West Hollywood or Chelsea every day of the week,” Bruce says in a statement. “Apparently, it’s only a ‘homophobic slur’ when it comes from the daughter of a conservative female leader."
So to be clear on this point, Bruce is saying that gays and lesbians wouldn't be upset—or at least wouldn't consider it a "homophobic slur"— if they heard some random straight man or woman calling out, "Faggot." And if they were in Chelsea or West Hollywood it would, apparently, be even less offensive.
Bruce goes on to say, "Make no mistake; this is all about destroying Sarah Palin by any means necessary. The angry misogynistic left and their accomplices in the main stream media..."
