The Sherman brothers created some of the most memorable songs in Disney history: “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocous” from Mary Poppins (among every other song), “I Wanna Be Like You” from The Jungle Book Story, the theme to Winnie the Pooh, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and more. They even wrote the most translated song ever written "It’s a Small World (After All)" for the Disneyland ride. Indeed, there are very few songs in the classic Disney pantheon that this Academy Award-winning songwriting team didn't work on.

But things aren't so rosey for the brothers Sherman. In The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story, you get a fascinating and gripping look at their history, how the two men were tied to one another through success—whether they liked it or not.

Conceived, produced and directed by two of the songwriters’ sons, this docu shows the duo's creative process as well as the rift that has kept them personally estranged throughout much of their professional partnership. It's a crazy concept that these two men, whose work was all about creating joy for young people, would hold such animosity.

The trailer is below, and in true Disney fashion it's a delightfully rosey picture that only glances at darker side of this story. Go ahead and watch it, feel nostalgic as some Disney marketing rep intended, but then buy this film anyway. It's a stunning, well crafted piece of filmmaking that will make you appreciate the Sherman brothers' work, but also better understand the human condition as it exists among true artists.

Get the movie.
