For its annual Swimsuit Issue, Out magazine approached some of the most celebrated art photgraphers in the industry to create a photo inspired by the 1950s magazine Physique Pictorial.

“In the ’50s and early ’60s, images of nearly naked muscle guys had to be slyly marketed for “body builders” or “art students,” notes writer Bruce Benderson in his introduction. “The other excuse, and the only one that let you show genitals, was the ‘naturist’ alibi.”
