SCIENTISTS MAKE NEW HIV BREAKTHROUGH
For the first time ever, scientists have filmed HIV infecting healthy cells within the body. By injecting a protein into the HIV code researchers were able to see the infected cell as it showed up as green when looked at under a blue light. In this amazing video you are able to watch as an uninfected T-cell is infected with the HIV virus.
"Our findings may explain why attempts to develop an HIV vaccine have so far been unsuccessful." said Dr Thomas Huser, chief scientist at the UC Davis Center for Biophotonics Science and Technology. "The more we know about this mode of transfer, the better chance we have of figuring out how to block it and the spread of HIV and Aids."
"We should be developing vaccines that help the immune system recognise proteins involved in virological synapse formation and antiviral drugs that target the factors required for synapse formation."
It was widely thought HIV spread by making copies of itself and freely circulating through the body. This video instead shows that it literally infects healthy cells.
