Golden Iris Watch: Andrej Pejic

Andrej Pejic is a bona fide fashion sensation.

Discovered while attending high school in Melbourne, Australia, Pejic began his career shortly after graduation. In just a matter of months, he landed the fall/winter 2010-2011 campaigns for Jean-Paul Gaultier and Marc Jacobs. In February, Gaultier cast the nineteen-year old in both his male and female spring collection runway shows, building the men's show around him and closing the women's collection with Pejic wearing a wedding gown.

For the most part, Pejic’s androgynous look has been a topic of interest, rather than outrage. That changed when retail chains Borders and Barnes & Noble requested his shirtless Dossier magazine cover (last photo below) be concealed in opaque bags. Still, many thought the book retailers overreacted, and the controversy died quickly. Pejic’s career remained unaffected and continues to soar. He was even included this year in The Advocate magazine’s 40 under 40 issue.

Pejic is unlike any successful male model before him. His unique career makes him a shoo–in for a 2011 Golden Iris nomination.
