WATCH: 'Comic-Con Episode IV: a Fan's Hope' Trailer
Comic-Con International: San Diego is the largest comic book and pop culture convention in the United States. Hundreds of thousands of people descend on "America's Finest City" every summer to take in everything from comics and Japanese animation to mainstream films, TV series, toys, gaming and more. Amidst those fans are famous celebrities, cult heroes, innovative artists and creators, and cosplayers—fans who dress up as costumed characters from their favorite pieces of entertainment.
And yet for all the media coverage this event garners, there has never been a movie or TV show dedicated to getting into this convention, meeting the attendees, and discovering what makes this place so important to fans and professionals all over the globe. That, however, may change.
Comic-Con Episode IV: a Fan's Hope (the title being a nod to the original Star Wars film, Star Wars Episode IV: a New Hope) opens over the next two weeks. It's written by Morgan Spurlock and Jeremy Chilnick, and directed by Spurlock. The docu follows various attendees' experiences at the 2010 Comic-Con. The trailer below features three, but in the press notes there are supposed to be five: two aspiring illustrators, a costume designer participating in the famous masquerade competition (pictured here with her crew), a comics dealer, and a young fan looking to propose to his girlfriend. The movie also features interviews with Comic-Con veterans who have turned their passions into professions, include Stan Lee and Joss Whedon (who are credited as "presenting" the film), Frank Miller, Kevin Smith, Matt Groening, Seth Rogen, Eli Roth and others. It feels like a lot to cram into an 88-minute movie, but the trailer makes it all look super good. (Yeah, that's right. We said, "super!") Check it out.
