Rupert Everett To Direct Oscar Wilde Biopic
To great gay acclaim, Variety is reporting that British actor Rupert Everett (My Best Friend’s Wedding, The Next Best Thing) will make his directorial debut with The Happy Prince, a feature length biopic about Oscar Wilde.
Everett, who in 2009 urged gay actors everywhere to stay in the closet, wrote the script and will play the green Malmaison Carnation-wearing English dandy alongside such notables as Colin Firth, Emily Watson, Tom Wilkinson and Edward Fox.
Described by Variety as a—quote—“comedy with tragic undertones that tells the story of the Irish playwright’s final days as he observes his own failure with ironic distance and humor,” The Happy Prince will start shooting in the summer of 2013 and Concorde Filmverleih has signed on to release the film at some point in the not-so-distant future.
