The Real Star of 'Maleficent': Brenton Thwaites
By: Ross von Metzke
This weekend, millions of people will flock to theatres to see Angelina Jolie chew scenery in the new Disney film Maleficent.
Jolie has already said she hopes to see a lot of Maleficent drag queens come Halloween. But Jolie, the classic Disney fairy tale and the promise of some high camp costumes aside, there’s another reason to go see Maleficent in theaters this weekend.
His name is Brenton Thwaites, and as you can see from the pictures here (film stills, photos from his Instagram, etc…), he’s clearly been plucked from the same pool as beefcakes like Taylor Lautner and Zac Efron before him.
The 24-year-old Aussie-born actor — who admits to almost passing out the first time he met brad Pitt — co-stars in Maleficent as Prince Phillip, the dashing young man who catches the eye of Aurora as evil Maleficent looks on. And while he’s already made a bit of a splash stateside with turns in the television remake of The Blue Lagoon in 2012 and the horror film Oculus earlier this year, Maleficent is the first in a string of high-profile films the actor has lined up in the coming months. First up is The Giver opposite Meryl Streep and Viola Davis, followed by films with stars including Ewan McGregor, Geoffrey Rush and Gerard Butler.
So while Maleficent is earning only lukewarm reviews (it’s currently at 48%), as you can see from these pics, the reviews for Brenton are all raves.
