M83's 'Midnight City' Is Our New Favorite Music Video

With all the focus on Madonna and Kylie, you may not know about M83, a musical act by French musician Anthony Gonzalez. But you should, because they're amazing. M83 is named after a spiral galaxy named Messier 83, and was founded in 2001 by Gonzalez and former member Nicolas Fromageau. Gonzalez (pictured below) mainly records on his own now, and Hurry Up, We're Dreaming is the band's first double album.

In July of last year "Midnight City" was released as the first single from the album and it got M83 a lot of attention. As The Huffington Post's Nico Lang recently wrote, "'Midnight City' placed at #1 on PopMatters,' Stereogum's and Pitchfork's lists of the Best Songs of 2011, at #2 on Paste's list (after "Helplessness Blues" by Fleet Foxes) and at #4 on the Village Voice's massively influential Pazz and Jop poll (behind three songs with far more mainstream pull)." Then just last week 'Midnight City" officially landed on the Billboard Hot 100 and is currently sitting at #78. Lang describes the song as "a triumphant, almost symphonic tune that blends shoegaze, dream pop and new wave with the current trend of electronic pop to create what will be remembered as one of this decade's masterpieces. As Pitchfork mentioned, the song most recalls '1979,' the Smashing Pumpkins' 1996 ode to youth — a song that really pushed the Pumpkins out of their alterna-rock niche to create a popular classic."

When we heard this haunting, exciting—and yes, triumphant—sounding song we were hooked. Upon seeing the video, which looks like an incredible trailer to a movie we'd love to watch, we purchased the entire double album. Check out the first single for yourself.
