WATCH: Mykki Blanco, Hip Hop’s Underground Drag Star
As a poet, artist, rapper and drag queen, the works of 24-year-old Mykki Blanco are not easily defined. And that’s not a bad thing when it comes to her latest music video, Join My Militia (Nas Gave Me A Perm).
You see, thanks to a barrage of genre-twisting, anything-can-happen images and lyrics, the video has generated much online buzz in the last few days—particularly for its jarring sexuality (communicated in a way that gives homage to antigay violence), a Blair Witch Project-like style, and raw frenzied rhymes that sound dystopic and staggering, as if they are heir to a not-so-distant but somewhat forbidden society.
Or perhaps, Join My Militia is merely the product of an alcohol-infused weekend on some deserted beach (which might explain why there’s a dead squid in Blanco’s mouth).
And to anyone in New York City, you can watch Mykki Blanco perform live this Thursday, May 17th, at Eastern Bloc (505 East 6th Street). Video below.
