Despite Disses, Gayngsta Le1f Still Busts A Freak-A-Chu On Pikachu
Several music blog comment sections burst into anti-gay flames when gay rapper Le1f recently dropped his new video for the song 'Wut.'
The blog Bossip headlined his video with "See What Frank Ocean Started?" and had comments like, "This unacceptable behavior even if he is gay! We don’t need to have a public display of a man over exaggerating female tendencies!"
Nevermind that homophobia and misogyny are two sides of the same bigoted coin, the only reason that people hate on Le1f is because he's got such banjee (a term he uses to mean "gay swagger") and, much unlike Mr. Ocean, Le1f put it on full display.
But that doesn't mean that Le1f's all gay and no good. Quite the contrary, the music magazine Filter says that in his April-released mixtape Dark York (which you can listen to or download for free):
He trained his tongue to spit quicker to match the music’s fast, funky horns, hyperactive drum machines and overall strange synth experimentation. He now flips seamlessly between a droll unfolding and a sprinting brag. He’s the first rapper to emerge from a culture of weird, underground electronic producers like Nguzunguzu (who produced three of Dark York’s tracks) that all found notoriety on the web and turned online success into packed club nights.
In his interview with Fader, Le1f said, “I am gay, and I’m proud to be called a gay rapper, but it’s not gay rap. That’s not a genre. My goal is always to make songs that a gay dude or a straight dude can listen to and just think, This dude has swag. I get guys the way straight rappers get girls. I’m not preachy. The best thing a song can be called is good."
Right on, you banjee girl!
