Whitney Houston: Our 5 Favorite Music Videos

By: Jase Peeples

Whitney Houston hit the music scene during the early days of the MTV revolution – a time when music videos weren’t simply changing the way we listened to music, but the level to which performers impacted pop culture as well. Whitney embraced the visual era of music and delivered videos as memorable as the songs she sang.

Over the many years of her impressive career, Whitney starred in over 50 music videos – each one showcasing her talent and highlighting her growth as an artist in an ever-evolving medium.

As we gear up to watch the iconic singer in her final film Sparkle, which lands in theaters August 17th, we’re taking a moment to recall our five favorite music videos from the legendary lady. Take a look at our list and then vote for your favorite below.

“How Will I Know”

Bright, bubbly, and beautiful, “How Will I Know” was the first music video from Whitney Houston that didn’t just grab our attention, it made us stand up and dance along in our living rooms. Whitney took home the Best Female Video award for the video at the 3rd MTV Video Music Awards and made it clear that a superstar was on the rise.

“I’m Your Baby Tonight”

Ushering in a new era of music, Whitney proved she was an entertainment heavy-hitter when she released “I’m Your Baby Tonight” in 1990. The video challenged anyone who questioned her staying power during her time between albums and served as a tribute to three legends who came before. Marlene Dietrich, The Supremes, and Audrey Hepburn all receive notable nods in the video and there was no one left who didn't believe Whitney was every bit the star they were when it ended.

“It’s Not Right But It’s Okay”

Whitney’s anthem for those who’ve been wronged by a lover stands tall on its own, but the music video for “It’s Not Right But It’s Okay” imbued the track with the strength to deliver a senses-shattering smackdown. The diva’s style and visual performance proved just how powerful a woman can be when she’s at her most feminine, while reminding us that playing the victim is never in fashion. Fabulous, fierce, and absolutely flawless.

“Million Dollar Bill”

On the heels of her split with husband Bobby Brown, Whitney opened up about many of her personal struggles and the demons she’d faced over the years. The singer’s music at that time reflected her new outlook on life and “Million Dollar Bill” – the second single from her chart topping comeback album I Look to You – showcased a star rising from the ashes, renewed, reborn, and ready to rock.

“I Will Always Love You”

Undoubtedly the most iconic video of her career – “I Will Always Love You” is, hands down, the greatest Whitney Houston video of all time. Not only because its clean and simple approach perfectly complements the powerhouse ballad, but also because it ties into the movie from which it came in such an elegant way while still allowing Whitney to sparkle brighter than she ever had before. The song’s lyrics are even more haunting now that she’s no longer with us, but this video is one of our favorite memories of a legend that we will always love.
