Lady Gaga Wants 'Applause' for New Piercing, Single Art

By: Brandon Voss

Remember when you could go a few days without hearing anything about Lady Gaga?

The Grammy-winning provocateur has announced that the first single from her upcoming album/app thingy ARTPOP will be "Applause," and she's released its striking single artwork shot by photography duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, who also helmed the "Applause" video.

”It’s the end of the night after the show,” she tells WWD of the cover image, which looks like a drag queen's mugshot after a really rough night. “When I look at it I see that there is a longing for the applause. I see that there is a void that is leaking onstage, that the performer is leaking, that the art is sort of becoming something else in front of your eyes. Something more human, something more honest.”

"Applause" will be released Aug. 19, the same day you can pre-order ARTPOP, due out Nov. 11. Gaga will debut "Applause" live Aug. 25 at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Because photos only say so much, Gaga has also plugged ARTPOP with a video of herself getting her septum pierced, posted by her makeup artist Tara Savelo.
