Gay Facebook Cofounder Likes Marriage Equality, Dislikes NC Marriage Amendment

By: Christopher Donaldson

Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes dislikes North Carolina’s proposed same-sex marriage amendment so much, in fact, that he has written the N.C. General assembly and its lawmakers urging them to take it off the legislative table. He will also pledge $10 for each person who “likes” Equality NC’s Facebook page—up to $10,000 by Tuesday.

The Advocate reports: “A native of Hickory, N.C., Hughes wrote that he understands the difficulties of growing up gay in the South and says the ban on marriage equality ‘will only perpetuate this stigma for a new generation of creative, talented youth, uninterested in second-class citizenship in a state they call home.’”

All funds raised will help Equality NC fight the marriage amendment, which Hughes calls “bad for business, bad for the perception of my home state on the national stage, and a far cry from job-creating legislation that North Carolina lawmakers should be focused on.”
