Fire Island Burns
A major fire broke out Monday night on New York State’s Fire Island. Reports are sketchy at the moment, saying that anywhere from two to seven landmarks in the Pines have been destroyed, including the La Fountaine, Canteen, Sandpiper, Sip and Twirl, Blue Whale and Pavilion buildings.
The fire started around 9:15pm, and according to the Sydney Star Observer, "Unconfirmed reports suggest the fire started at the Sip and Twirl before igniting gas tanks at La Fountaine which spread to the Pavilion, Canteen and Pool deck and thereon to other areas." So far there are no reports of damage to residential or rental properties, and no death or injuries have been reported.
UPDATE: Website GaySocialites.com just posted this: "We spoke with a firefighter moments ago who tells GaySocialites.com that damage seems to be very widespread, but the true extent of what is left standing may not be know until morning as the electricity in the Fire Island Pines is not working. He also tells us that the rescue effort took dozens of firefighters, and there do not seem to be any injuries reported."
