Washington Governor Signs Gay Marriage Bill Into Law
Governor Chris Gregorie (left, with gay State Rep. Jamie Pederson) signed a measure Monday afternoon that legalizes same-sex marriage in the state of Washington.
Senate Bill 6239, which was signed by the governor as marriage equality advocates looked on, was passed by the Washington House in a 55-43 vote and approved by the Senate last week. The law will take effect on June 7th, making Washington the seventh state to legalize same-sex marriage. However, anti-gay opponents plan to file a challenge that could put the law on hold pending the outcome of a ballot measure planned for November.
