Openly Gay Boy Scouts Coming Soon?
The Boy Scouts confirmed this week that it is considering allowing scouts and leaders to serve while openly gay in local chapters.
Advocate.com reports that the announcement was made after activist Zach Wahls delivered a petition with 275,000 signatures to the group and met with leaders in the organization. Wahls, who wrote My Two Moms: Lessons of Love, Strength, and What Makes a Family was outraged that a lesbian mother in Ohio had been removed as den leader for a Cub Scout troop.
Wahls stood wearing his old Eagle Scout uniform and said, "I love the organization and I refuse to stand by idly as it forfeits its cultural relevancy at the very moment this country needs it most."
A spokesman for the Boy Scouts acknowledges that similar resolutions to allow gay scouts and leaders have been considered in the past, with one request as early as 2000. If the policy change is approved this time around, the Boy Scouts probably would not implement the change until 2013.
