A majority of voters, 53%, say they would not vote for a candidate who does not share their beliefs about marriage equality.

The New York Times/CBS news poll shows that 56% of respondents say same-sex couples should have the legal right to marry, though 64% of respondents think marriage rights should be determined by states.

The results show heavy support for marriage equality among Democrats (70%),  58% support among independents, and 40% among Republicans. Still, 62% of those who identify as moderate Republicans support marriage equality, while a majority of Republicans ages 18-44 also support it.
