Democrat Mike Heinz, an openly gay Arizona state representative, announced his candiacy this week to run in the special election to fill the U.S. House seat vacated by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. If elected, Heinz would become the fifth openly gay House member.

"Moving forward I believe the best thing that we can do is to honor her strength, and conviction, and her leadership, by getting somebody, quickly, because we don’t have much time, into that seat who is going to carry forward in the tradition of moderate, bipartisan, common sense governance that she did so well for Southern Arizona, " said Heinz.

I'm not from Arizona, but I do respect Gabrielle Giffords, and I have an idea that she will give her support Mike Heinz; that's probably going to be good enough for most folks in Arizona. I hope and pray that he wins. The House of Representatives can use more members like him.

Sure, he's wicked cute, but he already sounds like a politician. Plus, why would anyone vote for a candidate just because he's gay? Without knowing anything about his political beliefs I can't say if I'd ever vote for him or not.

One thing I can say is that, without regard to his sexuality, it's likely to be a good day in politics when Barney Frank retires. That man was a disgrace to his office - and I say that because he dishonored the Constitution with nearly every vote he cast.

I would vote for him. He's cute, he's smart, and he looks very professional.

I hope he wins especially since Barney Frank is retiring. It is good to see someone who is smart, out and proud and looks as though he has the credentials to win. It should be about a person's intelligence, being genuine and not afraid to cave to anyone. I was always impressed with Anthony Weiner's tenacity and was so discouraged when he was so stupid to post those pictures of himself as if no one would ever find out. Best of luck Dr. Heinz!!

Heinz has a PhD? The article never mentioned that. By what criteria do you judge that he's smart? How does someone "look as though he has the credentials to win?" The article contained virtually no information about Heinz and only one quote - and that quote made him sound like an idiot.

I hope you get elected for Gaby's seat in he honer and because we need some one from our community (LGBT) that would help us become first class citizens and not some class of inhuman form just because we'r different, this make me feel like a black man in the 50's, it is not right it is discrimination in the year 2012.

Our kids are committing suicide because they are being told that they should't have been born and they have some kind of deformity within them self's.

please Mr. Mike Heinz win this seat and we will help you, and I ask you from my heart save our kids by representing the gay community for a first class citizens as well as all Arizonans.
