WATCH: Widowed Republican Lawmaker Defends Marriage Equality

Republican Rep. Maureen Walsh isn’t afraid to challenge common GOP assumptions about the gay experience. And fortunately for all of us, she stood her ground yesterday in Washington State, where she was one of only two Republican lawmakers to vote for full marriage equality rights.

Below, she explains why gay marriage matters and why her openly gay daughter deserves to live in a less seperate but equal world, saying, "I hope she will not feel like a second class citizen involved in something called a 'domestic partnership' which frankly sounds like a Mary Maids franchise." In any case, her ability to react intelligently and empathetically to our cause feels almost legendary.

Is building alliances between conservatives and the LGBT community even possible in these delicate days? Maybe.

Wonderful speech. Glad she has a fabulous daughter. Her daughter has an equally fabulous mom. :)

What an amazing person to take a such a stand on equal rights! Every word went straight to my heart as I realized that here was a person who truly believes in equal rights for all of us. We obviously need more people like Rep. Walsh in every State House in every state.

A person of eloquence with a strong moral sense of right from wrong, she had the courage to speak from her heart what she knew to be right. I am so grateful she did.

Rep. Walsh began by saying she isn't very eloquent. I disagree - her speech was beautiful. Thank you, Ms Walsh!

This woman is incredible. Her message could not have been anymore poignant and heart warming. Hopefully, more lawmakers will take heed to her words. Thank you for posting this. It has made my day!
