Watch: ‘I Will Marry You,' A Sumptuous Marriage Equality Ad From Italy

By: Christopher Donaldson
2.14.2012

This is refreshing: In a PSA entitled “I Will Marry You,” the Italian LGBT advocacy group Arcigay has no doubt unleashed a finely-tuned, almost poetic video on ordinary life and same-sex relationships that looks very much like Australia’s “It’s Time,” which The Advocate called “possibly the most beautiful ad for marriage equality we’ve seen.”

Below, sprinkled with music by Lorenzo ‘Jovanotti’ Cherubini, yellow sunlight and the sound of two men in love flutter all around like snowflakes. In other words, the video might knock your heart out. (via Instinct Magazine)

not in the philippines.................!goshhhh i wanna have boyfriend

Jefferson 2.29.2012 10:16:00 AM

hey rey, I'm tryin' to ignore your msg but its just so disturbing. why not in the Philippines? you are "sweeping generalization" i guess. you should have not typed any specific name/s in your comment if your intentions are all good -keep it blind man. Go for "gender and marriage equality"!! but is there any "nationality equality" in here?

ivan 2.23.2012 1:41:00 AM

Nick Simons 2.21.2012 5:21:00 AM

Of course the guys are very attractive and what is so nice is that it all appears so natural & unsensational. I DO feel we have a way to go to reach this degree of acceptance, however, we are on the way. Hooray! Nick(London.UK)

riccardo 2.20.2012 7:12:00 PM

Yes....someone said that Italy is far from this...Well so is the world that I belong to. I loved the music and the celebration of love. And that is what it is all about. Same rights and responsibilities as anyone else, regardless of religious affiliations.
Riccardo

Beautiful! It may be a bit of a dream, but as the song says, "if you don't have a dream, how you gonna make a dream come true?"

All so beautiful. But let me say that Italy is sadly far from this. Of course, dreams are always welcomed...

Robin 2.25.2012 1:37:00 AM

One day Italy and all countries will agree. I will dream too hopefully it comes true for all of us *hug*

Ryan Allen 2.20.2012 11:05:00 AM

Very beautiful I love it!

Anonymous 2.20.2012 10:57:00 AM

Cute, but full of the usual gay stereotypes:
- the grooms are super-fit, gorgeous and of course one's slightly twinky and the other slightly butch looking
- the lesbians are butch and/or dowdy
- the fathers of the groom are nowhere to be seen
- Wedding planner / decorator is extremely queeny looking w/ Joan Crawford plucked eyebrows
- Few, if any, people of color (even Italy has large populations of africans, arabs, etc.)

Anonymous 2.22.2012 10:57:00 AM

Why can't you just enjoy it for what it is rather than getting your panties into a pc knot!

Carlo 2.21.2012 1:44:00 PM

Anonymous - why are you always so negative. Enjoy it for what it is - a beautiful video!

Anonymous 2.20.2012 12:09:00 PM

thank you for complaining. i hope you feel better soon.

Doug Baker 2.20.2012 7:47:00 PM

Perfect! some folks aren't happy until they take all the beauty out of something. I'm a gay man and all I saw was love, acceptance and wonderful people...

dwmat96 2.20.2012 10:23:00 AM

Very well done. Reminds me of a time in the 80"s while traveling in Europe with my partner. Strolling down the streets of Paris were several same sex couples, holding hands and not being afraid of expressing their love for each other publicly. I stopped to talk with a couple, 1 who was french, his partner of 23 years at the time, was American. I asked them How was it that it was excepted there and not here in the states. There reply was simple, They, Europeans, ARE simply MORE CIVILIZED then we are.
We are the youngest nation, and though technologically we are well advanced, morally we are still in the dark ages.

Kevin H 2.20.2012 10:36:00 AM

A pen pal from a city in the Rhine-Ruhr area was taking me back to Frankfurt after having a marvelous week with his family in a beautiful home with an incredible group of people - his parents and his sister. They were typically European in their outlook - civilized as you put it. We parked blocks from the train station. A young man stopped my pen pal and asked him a question. My German was pretty good - so I was fairly certain of what he had asked my friend but I couldn't be sure. I said, "ummm did he just ask you where the local gay clubs were?" And he said, "yeah." And my Americanism showed through, I said, "wow." My pen pal looked puzzled, "why did I say that?" I explained that in the states if that happened (this was 1985) he probably would have gotten the crap kicked out of him for asking the question - especially if you were homophobic and straight. And he said in a very civilized tone, "but I'm NOT homophobic or straight." Later I thought to myself, man what he must have thought of me. But I was shaped by my culture and he by his.

Lucia Lemos - Brazil 2.20.2012 10:02:00 AM

Fantastic and very sensitive. I loved!! Congratulations!!

Anonymous 2.20.2012 10:01:00 AM

where are the guy's fathers?

Kenn 2.20.2012 9:42:00 AM

A role model for all of us. I have been blessed to be with my partner of almost 33 years. We married in Provincetown, MA in August 2009 and look forward to the day when everyone, everywhere is free to marry the love of their life without restrictions from the State. The churches, synagogues, mosques, etc. may keep their beliefs within their communities so long as they do not impose them on the civic life of their nations.

Kevin H 2.20.2012 10:41:00 AM

I'm sorry folks - shoot me - I know many of you will. I'm in favor of a complete 180 on marriage. I think the state should concern itself with civil unions - I think those unions should be the legal basis of a contract between two people that love each other that also decides things like property rights, health care and the rest. I think "marriage" - the kind that the far right in the US is so concerned about should remain in houses of worship. If my house of worship wants to marry me in a religious ceremony - fantastic. But my government should be godless and equal. Sorry but that's my opinion. Government needs to get out of the business of doling out doses of judgement.

Steve 2.20.2012 12:09:00 PM

I agree. Go beyond the sentimentality and contrived glamour to exit the apeing of straight marriage.
We have missed our chance to advance the uniqueness of gay culture in our striving for "respectability" and have endorsed a marriage format that has notoriously failed with it's unreal expectations and relationship minefields.

Anonymous 2.21.2012 12:40:00 PM

With all due respect, you're perfectly entitled to hold the opinion that you do, but it's a simple reality that the bulk of same sex couples, and LGBT individuals who are single, want marriage equality. If you believe that marriage is a failed institution, that's fine. There's a strong argument that it is. However, I don't think it's fair to criticize those who still wish to be a part of it. Whether I end up getting married or not, I want the right to, and frankly, it's a bit of a cop-out for Government to eliminate the idea of Civil Marriage as a way of appeasing everyone (the religious zealots get to keep their word and we get equality). It's a half measure that suggests that eliminating a civil institution that means a great deal to a great many is better than letting us in. No thank you.

Nanoccs1 2.20.2012 9:58:00 AM

Thanks for this wondeful video. It´s a tender breeze in teh middle of the storm!!!!

Anonymous 2.20.2012 9:12:00 AM

rivermoose 2.20.2012 9:10:00 AM

just beautiful, gorgeous faces

Paolo Rumi 2.20.2012 6:47:00 AM

it's not my kind of love, even less my model of marriage. but I like to see these guys and their frtiends and their families smiling.

Anonymous 2.19.2012 8:59:00 AM

The ad is genuinely well created and gets its point across with a different approach visibly trying to reach large audience for acceptance.

Simon 2.19.2012 8:38:00 AM

Italian commercial are, indeed, often 4, 5 minutes. It is really an eye opener...

Fahima 2.18.2012 6:55:00 PM

this is too sweet for my taste. australia's It's Time is much much better...music's good tho.

Bart 2.18.2012 4:27:00 AM

It is an ad? Are all commercials in italy 4 1/2 minutes long?

Anonymous 2.17.2012 12:46:00 AM

so sweet ... but the real life is not like that ....

Shawn 2.16.2012 7:33:00 AM

This video is perfect. My dream life.

I LOVE IT!!! I'd love it translated too :)

Kelesan 2.15.2012 3:52:00 PM

La famiglia é la famiglia. L'amore é l'amore. Bello.

T_o_m 2.15.2012 1:51:00 PM

People being people *sigh*. The wedding party wasn't exactly the crowd at Cheers, but who cares? It was a celebration of life that I hope everyone can relate to. Mazel Tov!

RAMZI 2.15.2012 12:38:00 PM

I like it

Ken 2.15.2012 5:25:00 AM

Flore 2.16.2012 6:59:00 AM
