Gay.net Attends Sierra College Pride Days Tomorrow
LGBT students and allies began celebrating Pride Days yesterday at Sierra College in Rocklin, CA. The events continue today and culminate tomorrow evening with a talk from Gay.net's Editor in Chief, Rick Andreoli.
This is a monumental three days for the community college, which has made slow-but-steady progress toward LGBTQ equality for students and faculty over the last few years. Just this semester the university created the SPECTRUM committee, chaired by openly gay professor Johnnie Terry, to focus on their LGBTQ students' welfare. The group will be seeking grants for anti-bullying campaigns, mental health services, scholarships and more, as well as finding ways to integrate LGBT issues into the school's curriculum and setting up emergency housing for students who are kicked out of their homes after coming out; according to Terry, this happens on campus at least twice per semester.
California Governor Jerry Brown recently signed a bill that requests all California community colleges to incorporate sexual orientation into their nondiscrimination policies. However, Terry says, "I don't think there is another community college in the state that has either a formal committee looking out for the needs of their LGBTQ students, or a campus-wide Pride event to support them."
Needless to say, Pride Days is a major event and Gay.net is proud to be a part of the celebration.
Sponsored by the Sierra College Rainbow Alliance, the
Associated Students of Sierra College, and the Greater Placer County PFLAG, this three-day event features a Ridley Art Gallery exhibit, an outdoor sculpture exhibit, two full days of informational booths on campus, plus 9 presentations, a faculty drag performance, and the aforementioned keynote address from Andreoli. The events are open to the public, but space is limited.
