New Orleans Pride - June 23-24, 2012

By: Scott Ragan

New Orleans Gay Pride is sometimes overlooked by the out of town masses for more well-known annual events like Southern Decadence and Gay Mardi Gras. But, The Crescent City has a rich Gay Pride history dating back to 1971 when the Gay Liberation Front of New Orleans had a picnic and rally in City Park. The first actual street parade was held in 1980, and in 1981 the event moved to Armstrong Park and was emceed by New Orleans native Ellen DeGeneres. More recent Pride events have changed during the past few years, with a parade once again held during the 2008 celebration and a gathering in Washington Square. For 2012 the parade will once again happen with an entire week of events leading up to Saturday and Sunday's main gathering in the romantic and historic French Quarter.
