Bareback Adult Films And Unsafe Sex - Monkey See, Monkey Do?

While the gay community has long stressed safe sex in HIV prevention, bareback (or condomless) porn is still a booming business.

But does condomless porn encourage its viewers to try unsafe sex too?

The UK-based FS Magazine wanted to know. So they asked 1,000 gay readers their thoughts via online survey.

Here's what they found: about 96 percent of all respondents had seen bareback porn, 53.6 percent thought that bareback porn influences people to have bareback sex, and seven percent said that watching bareback porn influenced them to try condomless sex.

FS magazine publisher Matthew Hodson said, “It’s impossible to say precisely how much impact watching porn has on people’s behaviour but it seems that many people, gay or straight, learn about sex from porn, and perhaps this is even more true for gay men, as we are less likely to get a gay sex education at school.”

But as gay porn blogger Zachary Sire of The Sword pointed out, "The 53.6% who think bareback porn leads to bareback sex are dead wrong... since about 890 out of 960 people who watch bareback porn say they aren’t having bareback sex."

Well, perhaps they're not dead wrong. It's reasonable to think that watching bareback sex might make a small number guys want to try it, but it's not like bareback pornos instantly turn their viewers into condom-free sex slaves—a lot of other factors could come into play including STD-status, access to condoms or use of drugs and alcohol which increase the likelihood of unprotected sex.

But it's obvious that we need to penetrate the subject more deeply in order to know how bareback porn affects the modern AIDS/HIV movement and the full impact of laws seeking to enforce condom use in adult films.
