STUDY: An Average Penis May Be Smaller Than You Thought

Are you sitting down, size queens?

Published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, a new research study from Indiana University, Erect Penile Length and Circumference Dimensions of 1,661 Sexually Active Men in the United States, may surprise those who believed a Subway six-inch was average.

If the results are to be trusted, the average erect length of an American penis is actually 5.57 inches. As for girth, the average erect circumfrence is 4.8 inches. Go ahead and grab the tape measure. We'll wait.

Just to be clear, those 1,661 members weren't actually measured; researchers relied on the men to honestly report their size in order to be matched to a Goldilocks condom that fit just right.

Whatever. Does size really matter anyhow? In a nutshell, says Dr. Debby Herbenick, Indiana University's Center for Sexual Health Promotion co-director, "research on sexual satisfaction tends to suggest that other factors (such as intimacy, affection, and psychological connection) are more important than a person's genital size." So there.

Compared to your own experiences, do those numbers sound about right to you?
